Straight Ticket Voting

Straight ticket voting, in a nutshell, is when a person goes to vote, and there is a button that says "Vote all Republican, or Vote all Democrat". It's one of the more concerning (yet interesting) election-related concepts I've come across in my time.
In my opinion I think it's best to vote for a person, not a party. I personally find voting straight ticket a bit unintelligent.
The National Conference of State Legislatures shows us that, as of July 26th 2015, only 10 states still permit there to be a straight ticket voting button. Utah, naturally, is one of them. I feel that because Utah allows there to be a straight ticket voting button, Democratic candidates have a much lower chance of winning any office, at any level.

I'm interested to know your personal opinion on straight ticket voting. Should we allow these 10 states to continue to offer this voting option? Do you believe in voting for specific people based on their policies (regardless of party), or do you believe in voting for a party regardless of whoever their chosen candidate is? Thoughts?

  1. I don't think that they should have straight ticket voting because taking it away does not take away the option of voting straight democrat or straight republican, it just makes it so that it is not the fastest option. Many people will push the straight voting button because it is convenient and they don't have to think much about it. I agree with you that the vote should be based on the people, not the party.

  3. It does give a lot of power to political parties if they can just convince people to vote for their ticket so I also think it would be good to make people press a couple extra buttons if only to make them think a little bit more.

  4. I agree, I think that straight ticket voting is stupid. People should think out all candidates before voting, rather than just take the easy way out and vote for everyone of the same party because you like a few key individuals. I think that our system works better with more diversity in parties and if we only get one party due to straight ticket voting it is only hurting ourselves.

  5. A straight party voting system, while it might be more effective in other countries where there are many political parties, in a two-party system really limits voter choices. There's a reason split ticket voting is becoming more popular. Really, the straight ticket voting wouldn't matter because few would use it if they were making logical decisions by each candidate, but because there is such a large ignorant mass it does pose a problem. Perhaps eliminating this option may prevent many in the ignorant mass from voting at all because they'd have to check each individual box for their party's candidates and would actually have to know who their party candidates are.

  7. I think that it would be better to have a split ticket system so that way voters have to spend at least a few seconds getting to know the candidates before actually voting.
