In a recent CNN poll, Donald Trump is leading all Republican candidates with 32% of voters choosing to support him. This is worrisome because Donald Trump is a guy who has some very alarming and questionable opinions and viewpoints. Yet he leads the polls once again.
As many people are aware, there seems to be this social media trend that everyone is going to "vote for Donald Trump as a joke". This was funny for about a day and now is very concerning. This man now leads the polls! To me this is evidence of a country that largely doesn't seem to care where it's going, or who leads it. Voter turnout is the worst it's been in a long time and a lot of the people who do show up are doing stupid things like this. How do we get our country to care about politics again? How do we get more voter turnout so that whoever we elect as president is legitimately the chosen representative of the masses and not just a group with select interests?
I think Donald Trump leads the polls because he represent extreme Republicanism. He's like a banner the rest of the party lines up behind. That would get people to vote but that wouldn't do much good because they would be extreme as well. I say that the people who want change should vote for change and get what they want passed and if it hurts those who didn't vote then you could say that's their bad.

ReplyDeleteYou're definitely right about the lack of concern being, well, concerning- Trump's popularity seems to come entirely from his outspoken and loud campaign and media representation, which means that people are listening to the guy who talks the loudest, a worrying symptom of an apathetic population. He also takes a very aggressive standpoint, which at a glance, could come across as having a plan. Honestly, the country will only start to care about politics once things are bad enough. Only then will the masses try to fix the country.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Liam. Though to some degree I think people like Trump because he is a leader and is not afraid to voice his opinion (little filter). This can be a good and bad thing and right now for this country it is not good.
ReplyDeleteThe other day I was talking to my friend from England (she lives here) and she told me that her friends from back home wonder if Donald Trump is a joke. And if people really think he is and if he thinks he is. I definitely do and it is nice to see that over time he is becoming less practical. More people realize he's a bit crazy. I think with time and with true explanation we can educate the world.
